Happy First Day of Autumn!

I love the fall. Though I've spent my adult life in northern California (where it was 90° today and autumn won't really arrive until closer to Thanksgiving), my Indiana childhood programmed me to feel the spell of fall today. All day, I've been wishfully humming Clint Black's "A Change in the Air."...a musical love letter to autumn.

Falling leaves, wearing sweaters, apple cider, and pumpkins. Last fall, I drew these three...it was originally supposed to be a group of four, but a big orange pumpkin that I had in the back just didn't look right, in the end. In this quick scan I did today, the colors aren't as accurate as those in the original photo I used in my blog banner, but I wanted to get this up before the day was over. It's funny what a difference a year makes. At the time, I was really satisfied with how the drawing turned out. Now, even though I still really like the bumpy green guy, I'm critical of other parts—but it's definitely still saying "Fall is here!" and that's what's important today.

  1. I think this drawing is pretty spot on. I love the white pumpkin. And I wait all year for fall! Headed to the Cape tomorrow where it's still too early for pretty foliage, but much cooler temps than here in Austin! Thanks for the beautiful work Sarah.

  2. Pretty picture. We are hotter than normal here in my part of Arizona too. I love fall; wish it felt more like it!

  4. Happy Fall, Sarah..this trio is perfect as it is! And I can only imagine how this time of year must resonate with you as a child brought up in the midwest. Fall is such an amazing time of year out there (something I experienced once while living in Ohio for a year). I tell you, being a California native, I hadn't realized how dramatic the seasonal changes could be..and now I have a huge appreciation for them and our amazing weather year round out here. Your illustrations just pop off the page..really wonderful work!

  6. I share your love of fall. It's slower to come out here than what I remember from growing up back east. Our seasons tend to roll in a little more gradually--but I can smell it in the air! I think this drawing is beautiful. All three pumps look successful to me. My eye goes straight to the orange one--such rich color. Beautiful work, Sarah-- as usual :) :)

  7. They are wonderful drawings Sarah, I too love the green one. I have some gourds ripening in my garden and they are such interesting shapes, you would love to sketch them!
    Have a creative week,

  8. Hello Sarah!
I googled "refeathering an empty nest" and the search led me to your blog! I just wanted to tell you that it is absolutely lovely... your botanical drawings are beautiful!

  9. Congratulations with your lovely pumpkins, Sarah. I've drawn a pumpkin too. I wish I had that green and white one.
Did you eat your pumpkin after drawing it? We did. The soup was yummy, although I must confess I felt a bit barbaric to cut the object of my drawing into small pieces. :-)

  10. I have always felt a surge of energy in Fall as our steamy NC weather finally eases up. Yet there is also a touch of foreboding, because I know the Winter blues aren't far away. That just means I have to enjoy this season extra hard! And I love it when the Farmer's Market fills up with gourds & pumpkins of every size, shape, pattern & color. You've captured the season so beautifully!

  12. In Australia it is spring and my poor pumpkin vine has been scratched up by my chickens. Love your work Sarah and the bumby green guy is cute.

  14. What a beautiful painting. I don't see any of the troublesome spots of which you speak.

Being spring in Australia, this picture reminds me that we need to eat up our very last pumpkin, grown last summer, which has been saved in the pantry. So I guess pumpkins mean different things depending on the local weather!

  15. Sarah, it's now October 8th and the brisk hint of Fall has finally arrived in San Jose. Thank goodness.
I remember when you bought those pumpkins and feel lucky to see them again in your vivid illustration. Thank you.
