Illustration Friday: Lonely

It's impossible to be lonely when you have a good book—and a chicken or two.

This is May, my Buff Orpington hen, atop one of my latest yard sale finds. My husband spotted these beautiful Adirondack chairs when we stopped at a yard sale on our Saturday morning walk home from the coffee shop.

Both chairs and both footstools for $22—such a steal! I may refinish them down the road, but I kind of like their weathered look. But best of all, they're really comfortable for reading on a summer afternoon; May and Charlotte think so too.

Are you reading anything wonderful this summer? (I keep my current picks on my sidebar over to the right, if you're interested.)

  1. So true so true. Give me the company of a good book over a crowd of people any day. I could use a comfortable reading chair too, but comfortable chairs seem to be even harder to find than good books these days.

  2. Wonderful sketch. I like how you chose to only color the chicken and the book. I'd say you did get a great find with your chairs. Enjoy!!

  3. Love this!!! Our chickens used to love to jump on the arms of our adirondack chairs too. This makes me smile. I've been missing them this summer... Beautiful sketch and GREAT FIND!

  4. Lovely drawing! I really appreciate people who can draw things in perspective, and the spot color really tells the story. Nice job, and a great deal on the chairs! Gotta admire good garage saling :)

  5. You were really lucky with the chairs and you've already used them well in your illustration!

  6. Thanks everyone! Yes, Adirondack chairs were designed with that big, level arm so that you don't need a table for your drink. I'm not sure the original designers had "chicken roost" in mind!

  7. I'm glad you decided to go in the direction of - what keeps you from being lonely - because the posts this week are far too sad. I never would expect the answer "chickens and a book" but it is hilarious! Love the illustration and your great line work.

  10. Those chairs do look super comfy in the dappled sun. That's my favourite way to spend time with a book.

As for my book this summer, I guess it would have to be my sketchbook! ;)

  16. Wow, what a find! Lovely illustration and I couldn't agree with you more about a good book. I don't have chickens but my little dog curls up beside me - bliss!

  17. Nice drawing! For books, I recommend anything by Norwegian author Jo Nesbo. Just finished his book "The Leopard"

  18. Great Yard Sale find! I would be tempted to leave that wonderful, well-worn paint...it's a patina you just can't replace. Beautiful drawing, always a treat for the eyes!
