A new leaf

Two of my New Year's resolutions at work here: (1) Draw something every day and (2) Post more often. So, even though this is a rather humble drawing, I'm sharing it.

I adore cyclamen, with their heart-shaped leaves. The white of the flowers is the whitest, freshest white there is, and the way they bloom sort of upside-down and inside-out makes me smile. In fact, this was just a drawing to sort of "get acquainted" with the shapes and structure; I'm thinking that I could have some fun doing some close-ups of the blooms and/or some detailed color pieces.

It took about an hour, including the time I had to go outside and calm my chickens down. (The squirrels find it amusing to sit in the trees above them and shower them with leaves. Clearly, squirrels rank a bit higher than chickens on the intelligence chart.)

I'm never quite happy with how pencil sketches scan. I tried taking a shot of it with my camera, but my photography needs work (another resolution). If you scan pencil and colored pencil artwork and feel like sharing what scanner you've had success with, I'd love to hear from you!

  1. Love your cyclamen - I reckon you achieved a great deal in one hour - I chuckled at your chicken interlude! The scan looks like it could be brightened a tad to remove the yellowish tinge - have you tried fiddling with the levels (on your scanner if it has that function,or in a photo editing programme)?

  2. Love the details in your cyclamen here. Sometimes it is a really nice change to see just the black, white, and greys of pencil.

  5. Sarah, that is a great plan. We will be the lucky recipient of your artistic endeavor. I love your drawings, actually your work. Anything you do, just reminds me of the great botanical masterpieces. Your emu egg! Oh my goodness. How sweet is that. Thank you for asking about my blog title. I have blogged about that several times but to summarize, in 2006, when I started blogging, I wanted to talk about my love for Fiesta dishes. I heard about blogs through the Fiesta message board Mediumgreen, now gone, and some members had blogs. Well, how much can one talk about dishes? I got tired of it after a few months and then started talking about other things that interest me and the art just edged everything else. Heheh. I have deleted my blogs three times in the past. Oh well. Thank you.

  7. Wonderful resolutions & a lovely drawing! I'm a cyclamen fan too, though my own plants were destroyed when we had work done on the house a couple of years ago. Thanks for the reminder to replace them!
